With 4,000 years of history, Jerusalem is the holiest city of them all, a true melting pot of people, cultures, traditions and religion and easily combined with nearby Tel Aviv, the 24 hour beach city. It’s a compelling mix, with both cities currently having a bit of moment as I found out on a recent visit. No trip to Jerusalem would be complete without a drive to the Mount of Olives for a panoramic view of the city and a trip to the Old City, seeing the Western “wailing” Wall, walking through the Armenian and Jewish quarters to the recently excavated and restored Cardo (the Roman road) and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. However, I can also recommend a tour of the City of David where ongoing archaeological excavations of ancient Jerusalem, include fortifications and elaborate water systems, Hezekiah’s Tunnel, the Pool of Shiloan and a newly opened visitor centre. Part of the tour allows you to walk inside a 2,000 year old water drainage system. The exposed drainage tunnel measure 800 metres (2625 feet) long and a metre (3 feet wide) so not for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia but still a unique experience, crouching down as you wade through water up to or above your knees and be sure to wear shoes that you’re not afraid to get soaked. Also fun is “Hallelujah”, the City of David’s newest night-time spectacular. Using the latest technological advances, the show is screened onto the antiquities, with the walls of the Old City visible in the distance. The upper level of the Shrine introduces visitors to the story of the Scrolls and the Judean Desert sect. If you’ve had your fill of culture and history, then Israel’s thriving wine industry has generated a great opportunity for wine tourism and an alternative day out. More than 25 wineries can be found in the Judean Hills with The Judean Hills Quartet, nothing to do with music but a group of artisan wineries, providing a window into the rebirth of a beautiful wine region. Eli Ben Zaken is the founding father of the Judean Hills renaissance and it was at Domaine Du Castel, his family owned winery that I enjoyed quality Bordeaux style reds and Burgundy style white. Eli proudly showed me an e mail from the head of Sotheby’s wine department, describing his wine as a “real tour de force, brilliantly made and very classic”. Praise indeed. Wine tours might be the relatively new kid on the block for tourism in Israel but the diverse foodie scene with influences from all over the world has long been a highlight. We have a lot to thank world-acclaimed chef and owner of multiple London restaurants, Yotam Ottolenghi for and it’s not all pomegranates and salads. The cuisine reflects Israel’s nature as a melting pot for many communities at the meeting point of East and West. Expect a fusion of traditional Middle Eastern, North African and exotic Asian flavours plus continental European cuisine. Every restaurant and cafe in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv was supposedly home to “the best hummus in the world” whilst a breakfast buffet in even the smallest of hotels would have dozens of choices and don’t even get me started on the bakeries. Not to be missed on any culinary adventure is a trip to the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem and the smaller but equally atmospheric Carmel market in Tel Aviv. Rivalling the new wave of food markets which have popped up around the world, Sarona Market also in Tel Aviv is an indoor gourmet food market which also got my approval. “Two Cities, One Break” is the current tag line for Jerusalem and Tel Aviv with Tel Aviv being the fly and flop, R and R part of the break, the chilled out sister to Jerusalem’s more highbrow older brother. Stwierdziłam więc, że teraz albo nigdy i tak oto wylądowaliśmy na lotnisku w Tel Awiwie. Po samym przylocie udajemy się do punktu wydania wiz turystycznych. Przygotujcie się, że musicie odpowiedzieć na kilka podstawowych pytań typu: skąd lecicie, jaka jest Wasza narodowość, na ile przyjechaliście, z kim i w jakim celu. Tak naprawdę to standardowe pytania przy wydawaniu pozwolenia pobytu w danym kraju. Prepare yourself that you have to answer some basic questions like: where are you going from, what is your nationality, how much have you come, with whom and for what purpose. In fact, these are standard questions when issuing a residence permit in a given country. Interesting fact: the visa has recently been issued in the form of a separate paper card, which you can put in your passport, but it is not a stamp, as it used to be. This is a great convenience for people who want to travel to Arab countries, mainly for political reasons. It happened more than once that people with an Israeli visa in their passport had problems with granting Arabic one, in Jordan. Super wygodny i umieszczony w podziemiach lotniska. Rewelacja! Bilet kosztuje zaledwie 15 szekli, a odległość jaką musi pokonać pociąg to ok. 60 km. English version: After granting a visa from the airport in Tel Aviv, we went straight to Jerusalem. The fastest and at the same time the cheapest type of public transport is a city train. Super comfortable and located in the -1 floor of the airport. Revelation! The ticket costs only 15 shekels, and the distance that the train must travel is about 60 km. Jerozolima - Stare Miasto Nasze zwiedzanie rozpoczęliśmy oczywiście od spaceru po starym mieście. Jeśli nie znacie topografii miasta, a w samym miejscu jesteście po raz pierwszy, intuicyjnie kierujecie się w stronę targu umiejscowionego w labiryntach starych murów Jerozolimy. Jak się później okazało należy on głównie do muzułmańskich handlarzy, którzy kuszą turystów kolorowymi przyprawami, ceramiką, ozdobami i przepiękną biżuterią. Trudno przejść obok nich spokojnie! Nie radzę też wybierać się tutaj na wycieczkę samemu, bo bardzo łatwo jest się tutaj zgubić. Jednocześnie jeśli lubicie robić zakupy, to miejsce idealne dla Was! Muzułmanie kochają się targować i bardzo często można upolować tutaj piękne i smakowite rzeczy za naprawdę niską cenę. If you do not know the topography of the city, and you are here for the first time, you intuitively head towards the market located in the mazes of the old walls of Jerusalem. As it turned out later, it belongs mainly to Muslim traders who tempt tourists with colorful spices, ceramics, decorations and beautiful jewelry. It's hard to walk past them peacefully! I also advise you not to go here on a trip alone, because it is very easy to get lost here. At the same time, if you like shopping, this is the perfect place for you! Muslims love to haggle and you can often hunt for beautiful and tasty things at a really low price. Ściana Płaczu Absolutny punkt obowiązkowy wycieczki do Jerozolimy. Panuje tutaj dość specyficzna atmosfera łącząca ze sobą swego rodzaju mistycyzm oraz dziwnie wyczuwalne napięcie. Ściana Płaczu podzielona jest na dwie strony: prawą damską i lewą męską. Jest to bardzo oczywisty podział, który należy absolutnie respektować. Zanim się tutaj wejdzie, trzeba przejść dodatkową kontrolę bezpieczeństwa, która jest przy każdym wejściu do Ściany Płaczu. Przypomina mniej więcej kontrolę na lotnisku, jednak o wiele sprawniejszą i trwa dosłownie moment. Izraelczycy uzasadniają to kwestiami bezpieczeństwa, czemu nie należy się dziwić. Jerozolima to w końcu miasto gdzie krzyżują się 3 największe religie świata: islam, judaizm i chrześcijanizm. English version: The Western Wall An absolute must to see if you are planning visit Jerusalem. There is quite a specific atmosphere here combining a kind of mysticism and a strange tension. The Western Wall is divided into two sides: men's right, and women's left. This is a very obvious division that must be absolutely respected. Before entering here, you need to undergo an additional security checkpoint, which is at each entrance to the Western Wall. It is more or less like airport control, but much more efficient and literally takes a moment. Israelis justify this with security issues, which is not surprising. After all, Jerusalem is a city where the three largest religions of the world cross each other: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Bardzo zasmakowała mi też chałwa z czarnuszką (niestety zanim zdążyłam zrobić zdjęcie, już dawno ją pochłonęliśmy). I also liked halva with black cumin (unfortunately, before I could take a picture, it has been already eaten by us). Góra Oliwna Góra Oliwna znajduje się już po palestyńskiej stronie Jerozolimy. Możecie dostać się na nią planując długi spacer, jest to jednak całodniowa wycieczka. Polecam złapać autobus w centrum na dworcu autobusowym, za który zapłacicie zaledwie 8 szekli, a dojazd macie na samo wzgórze. U podnórza Góry znajduje się Najstarszy na Świecie Cmentarz Żydowski. Każdy ortodoksyjny Żyd chce być tam pochowany, a podobno sama rezerwacja miejsca kosztuje fortunę. To właśnie z tego miejsca ma też rozpocząć się Sąd Ostateczny. Schodząc w dół traficie również do Ogrodu Oliwnego, w którym Jezus modlił się przed Drogą Krzyżową. Jej stacje znajdują się na całej trasie góry, także można zwiedzić wszystko w ciągu jednego spaceru. English version: The Mount of Olives is already on the Palestinian side of Jerusalem. Ich kuchnia składa się przede wszystkim z hummusu, oliwy, jajek, pikli i idealnej kombinacji przypraw. Nawet najprostsze śniadanie serwowane u nas w hostelu było po prostu przepyszne! Even the simplest breakfast served in our hostel was absolutely delicious! The Dome of The Rock - Kopuła Na Skale Miejsce, do którego nie tak łatwo się dostać. Kopuła na Skale znajduje się w palestyńskiej części miasta i dla przedstawicieli innych religii otwarta jest tylko w przeznaczonych porach na zwiedzanie. Jest to miejsce absolutnie strzeżone, a policja zarówno palestyńska, jak i jerozolimska traktuje zwiedzających dość surowo. Kobiety muszą mieć zakrytą każdą powierzchnię ciała. Długie rękawy, rozpuszczone włosy zasłaniające szyję i zasłonięte nadgarstki. Ja zostałam poproszona o założenie dodatkowej spódnicy, ponieważ według tamtejszych władz miałam zbyt obcisłe spodnie. Pomimo wydawać by się mogło niesprzyjających tu swobodnemu zwiedzaniu zasad, Kopuła na Skale zrobiła na mnie niesamowite wrażenie i wiem, że chciałabym tam jeszcze kiedyś wrócić! Despite the seemingly unfavorable rules for free visiting here, the Dome of the Rock made an amazing impression on me and I know that I would like to go back there again someday! Z krótką wizytą w Betlejem Będąc 3 dni w Jerozolimie, nie sposób nie odwiedzić też Betlejem. Samo miasto znajduje się już jednak w Palestynie, dlatego planując tam wycieczkę, trzeba mieć ze sobą paszport. Do miasta dojedziemy z dworca autobusowego Jerozolimy, gdzie autobusy do Betlejem kursują średnio co godzinę. Przyznam szczerze, że Betlejem wzbudziło we mnie jednak najmniej emocji. Praktycznie w ogóle nieoznakowane (jest to oczywiście kwestia sporów religijnych) i dużym minusem jest brak organizacji w tym miejscu, co daje się odczuć na każdym kroku. W grocie kościelnej, która symbolizować ma miejsce narodzin Jezusa, są tak ogromne kolejki, że po kilku godzinach stania w jednym punkcie odechciewa się dalszego zwiedzania. Samo Betlejem jest naprawdę małe. Liczy ono zaledwie kościół, dlatego planując przyjazd do Betlejem warto poświęcić góra 3-4 godziny. The city itself is already in Palestine, therefore, when you are planning a trip there, you must have a passport with you. You can reach the city from the Jerusalem bus station, where buses to Bethlehem run on average every hour. I honestly admit that Bethlehem gave me the least emotion. Virtually unmarked (this is obviously a matter of religious disputes) and the big downside is the lack of organization in this place, which can be felt at every step. In the church grotto, which is to symbolize the birthplace of Jesus, there are such huge queues that after a few hours of standing at one point, you are not in the mood to go on sightseeing more. Bethlehem itself is really small. It counts only a church, so planning a trip there it is worth spending up to 3-4 hours.
